Deception comes in many colors, flavors, and forms. It is clothed in someone or something that has a type of ‘swag’ to sway you from realty, confuse you and, lead you astray.
Deception can the many varieties of colors of Valspar paint, snack foods on grocery store shelves, the many career choices, and television advertisements. Throw social media into the mix, and we have a pretty easy way to be confused. Deception ( to me ) is the many swatches of fabric, the types of threads, and designs that I have to choose from before making a project. Yep. I have a God-lead idea for a project, then I hit with all kinds of distracting elements to prevent me from concentrating on that one project god assigned me. How silly, right? But when you really sit for a minute, by yourself, no phone, no t.v., no person, you aren’t alone with just one thought, right? You’re alone with many..
The Bible includes a whole lot on deception and it’s ‘many faces’. In fact, 59 verses (maybe more) tell the human race that we are being deceived every day, even in the slightest ways. And nowadays, isn’t so much easier to be persuaded to choose what we want versus what’s for our best interest?
I believe in the God of the Bible, therefore, I believe His truth when it comes to these days we are living in. Jeremiah 17:9 states,
“The heart is more deceitful than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it?”
I am more persuaded to selfishly look after my own well-being than to look after another. That is just how it is in this world. But the very present hope I have is that I can look to Jesus, who made intercession for me, to guide my heart and change my thinking. He can and He does. We are all children of God. The deception is that we need to go to a priest for confession. Or we need to go a church to be ‘good’. or we don’t quite feel ‘good’ at the moment so when we feel better about ourselves, we will then go to God because He will surely help us then. And that is simply not true. It’s a deception, it’s a scam. God wants us right there, making all feelings and requests know to Him, no matter what they are.
In all ways will the invisible enemy – satan – distract you from seeking the truth. He will absolutely whisper thoughts so you can rely on your feelings, Christian or not. He doesn’t want you to have joy, peace, love, sound-mind. He will most certainly waste all of your time choosing the right colors for that small carpet space in the church to keep you from getting it done. Perhaps he’ll confuse you so much, you’ll drag it out for months, leaving an incomplete project standing in the way of the ministry of serving (I’ve seen this happen!). You can be sure that he will confuse you and deceive you into leaning on your feelings and understanding about anything, even as stupid as a color for your office. Yes, as silly as that sounds. He loves to distract and his goal is deception. Anything the enemy can do to prevent people from Gods plan. Anything. And he will, especially if it means getting personal.
Solomon, a wise king, son of King David, spoke clearly about wisdom and understanding. In Proverbs 3:5-6 he writes,
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.[a]
In all ways, even the tough decision of buying a car, house, choosing a hcurch, naming your child, going to the grocery store. You were not born by accident but by the perfect will God. In fact, satan knew/knows how special you are to God, that he (satan) exhausted (and still is!) all of his time trying to distract you and deceive with your personal feelings, loved ones’ influence, and things around you from accessing the grace and love God has already planned through His son Jesus.
Many years I have spent being guided by my feelings. Until I was so deep in deception that I didn’t know what to believe anymore. I had known God from my youth but kept Him at arms length because I was deceived when I was 16. But it’s amazing how clear and sound-minded you become when you get on your knees and pray, asking God to reveal the truth. And He does. I will leave you with these awesome and inspiring scriptures.
19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,
and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many.
1 Timothy 2:14
And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression
The serpent said to the woman, You surely will not die!
1 John 1:8
If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
2 Thessalonians 2:3
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction
1 Timothy 4:1
But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons
